The Growing Experience Long Beach

The Growing Experience is an urban farm and community garden located within the Carmelitos Public Housing Development in North Long Beach, California.

Located in a region that has been recognized as a food desert, The Growing Experience provides access to locally grown, healthy foods in an area that has been traditionally under-served. Additionally, The Growing Experience provides a variety of community workshops and programs, hosts community events, offers safe green space for recreation, and promotes community building while serving as a model for sustainability.

Alexandria House

Founded in 1996, Alexandria House is a transitional residence and house of hospitality. We provide safe and supportive housing for women and children in the process of moving from emergency shelter to economic stability and permanent housing. Located in the densely populated and ethnically diverse Mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles, we also serve our broader neighborhood community by providing educational and enrichment opportunities for our neighbors as well as our residents.

In response to the compelling needs of the women and children living in Alexandria House, as well as the neighborhood needs before us each day, our goal is to be a community-oriented transitional house and neighborhood center. We are intentionally multicultural and anti-racist, and the needs of women who are economically poor are at the center of our commitment. We are blessed to be supported by a community of caring individuals and groups who share our mission.

More than 92% of the women who have moved through the Alexandria House program have succeeded in securing financial stability and permanent housing.

Justice For Black Girls (Freedom Fighters Fund)

The Freedom Fighters Fund is designed to provide monetary relief for Black girl activist, like Toyin, who are on the frontlines. This fund allows Black girls to request grants up to $750 for overnight housing, rent relief, food or other life-sustaining supports. Toyin was fighting for the protection of everyone, but where could Toyin find protection? What we know about oppression and marginalization, is that there is never just one victim. Conversely, there are systems that worked together to ensure that Toyin was rendered powerless to all of the systems she was fighting against. Not anymore- we can’t allow Black girls to put their bodies and minds on the frontlines without protection.
